hit or miss I suppose. asking around for lifts to london or bristol generally unsuccessful. most truckers are in the trucker lounge, which, unless you came on board the ferry with one, you won't be able to enter. otherwise, cause it was a late afternoon ferry, most passengers were either staying in dover or somewhere, or lived in Kent...
so duh get the early ferry

Awful if you're not going straight into London. Had a sign saying M25 S and waited 2 hours before walking into town to get a train to Maidstone. Cars are going quite fast but the hard shoulder is big, 1 car and 1 truck stopped to offer me lifts further along the road or into London.

Heading to Europe, had a sign saying London. Good spot opposite the gas station, lots of traffic, very visible, space to stop. Got a lift in 15 minutes with a car heading into London. Got off in Slough - bad decision! Should have got off at Reading services.

Heading to Europe, got a lift in 30 minutes with a sign saying London. Car was leaving the M4 before Reading services so I got off at Membury. Good spot, extra lane for cars to pull over safely.

It took me quite a while to find a truck going past London towards Dover, but with a bit of luck, you can do it easily. It's a big rest stop on both sides, so it's not hard to find a car going anywhere.

Waited about an hour, mostly outside the shop with a sign saying Calais>UK, and asking the few cars I saw with UK plates. Eventually an Irish guy offered me a lift, took me in the ferry and dropped me outside London.

A pretty good gas station, if you need a ride towards Cambridge or London. I got a ride in a moment. There is a lot of traffic.

DO NOT GO HERE
A guy & a girl wanting to go to Bourges.
Waited for 4h, it's a right-wing town and people are mean.
Only made it thanks to DJ Gyrobeats from London, his super '92 model car & surround sound system setup (2 linked JBLs). Worth the wait though he made us discover a bunch of cool sounds + a preview of his new album. Don't count on him to make it out of here though, he's only here a few times a year.

I hate hitching from within cities and being solo you may attract more heckling here, I had a sign for london and gave up after only being offered one lift the wrong way in an hour and a half

surprisingly smiley people (if you're smiling!). good spot for London, lots of opportunity for them to slow down and give you attention, and little layby.

A blind corner as cars are speeding up for the motorway. There is space to stop. Maybe try along London Road but there’s not many good spots to stop around the roundabout

I find lifts in Oxfordshire take a bit longer than average. Good spot for cars to stop in the bus bay. Despite the rain made it halfway to London!!

I've stopped here twice while hitchhiking south from Scotland to London. First time got a ride to Birmingham, and the second time to London. Both pretty quickly. Plus the services are comfortable, with free toilets, charging sockets etc. I would definitely stop here again when looking for a longer-distance ride.

Maidstoners aren't generally the hitching type... I tend to get a lot of confused and/or disgruntled stares when hitching to London from around here. But hey, this is the roundabout which leads onto the main motorway which goes to London.

Second car I asked took me to the outskirts of London.
